Root Canal Therapy in Summerville, SC

Root canal therapy is a common endodontic procedure offered at Bloom Endodontics designed to treat infection or damage inside a tooth, helping to relieve pain and preserve the natural tooth. By removing the affected tissue and sealing the canals, this treatment restores function and protects long-term oral health. Dr. Timothy Gibson provides specialized root canal care using advanced techniques to ensure comfort and effective results. To learn more or schedule your appointment, contact our office in Summerville, SC today.

Root canal treatment is performed under local anesthesia to keep patients comfortable throughout the procedure. Dr. Gibson begins by creating a small opening in the tooth to access the inner chamber and carefully remove the damaged or infected pulp. The root canals are then thoroughly cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to eliminate bacteria before being sealed with a biocompatible material to prevent reinfection. Finally, the tooth is restored with a filling or crown for added strength and protection. Depending on the case, root canal therapy typically takes 60 – 90 minutes and can often be completed in a single visit.

After a root canal, the tooth itself is no longer infected, but the surrounding tissues still need time to heal. Mild discomfort, tenderness, or sensitivity is expected and typically short-lived. Our team provides personalized aftercare guidance, including how to manage discomfort and when it is safe to resume normal chewing. Patients are advised to keep the area clean and attend any recommended follow-up appointments. A final crown or restoration is often necessary to prevent fracture and restore strength. Healing should progress steadily, and our providers are available to evaluate any lingering or worsening symptoms.

Root canal therapy offers lasting relief from tooth pain while preserving your natural smile. Benefits of a root canal include:

  • Saves the natural tooth from extraction
  • Relieves pain and sensitivity
  • Stops infection from spreading further
  • Restores normal chewing and biting function
  • Provides long-term oral health protection
  • Supports a confident, healthy smile

I have been to Dr Gibson more times than most would like to count in one year. He consistently does incredible work! He is smart, calm, and easy to talk to. He's a great listener and he takes his job very seriously. I hate the work, but if I have to have a root canal, I'm definitely going to Dr. Gibson at Bloom endodontics.

Dr Gibson was absolutely wonderful!! Just like a lot of people that have issues with the dentist I am in that category… I have been through great dentists and I have been through terrible ones and these guys are at the top of the list! Dr. Gibson and his staff were so nice and calm and just amazing from the moment, I walked in the door. I got a root canal and it even had some complications from an impaction, but he stayed very professional and caring through the whole thing. And, after the numbing wore off, I only had some pain in my jaw because it had to stay propped open so long and I have a locking jaw, but that’s my problem that I’ve lived with… nothing in the area he was working. The next day I feel absolutely amazing. Thank you so much!

If a tooth has become painful, sensitive, or infected, root canal therapy may be an effective way to address the issue while preserving your natural smile. Many people are candidates without realizing it, especially when symptoms start gradually or come and go. Our team performs a detailed evaluation to understand the source of discomfort and recommend treatment that aligns with both dental health and comfort. You may be a candidate for root canal therapy if you notice:

  • Tooth pain that worsens over time
  • Sensitivity that lingers
  • Discomfort when biting
  • Swelling or pressure in the gums
  • A history of trauma to the tooth

Not every tooth can or should be treated with a root canal. Our providers carefully assess each case and help you understand whether this option or an alternative treatment is the most appropriate and effective choice.

Insurance coverage for root canal therapy depends on your specific dental insurance plan. Many plans cover a portion of the procedure, as root canals are typically considered medically necessary to save a damaged or infected tooth. Our team at Bloom Endodontics can assist you in understanding your insurance benefits and provide an estimate of out-of-pocket expenses. We also offer flexible payment options to help make root canal therapy accessible to all patients.

Has Root Canal Treatment Gotten Less Painful Over the Years?

Yes, root canal therapy has advanced dramatically over the years, and patient comfort has improved as a result. Modern dental anesthesia allows our providers to numb the area thoroughly before treatment begins, significantly reducing discomfort during the procedure. In addition, digital imaging and specialized instruments make it possible to treat infected tissue with greater precision and efficiency, which helps minimize irritation to surrounding structures. Many patients find that the procedure is much more comfortable than the symptoms they were experiencing beforehand. Our team focuses on a steady, measured approach, checking in throughout the appointment and adjusting as needed to ensure you remain comfortable while protecting the long-term health of the tooth.

Do I Need Someone With Me at a Root Canal Appointment?

This depends on how your root canal is performed and whether sedation is part of your care plan. Patients who receive local anesthesia only are typically able to drive themselves to and from a root canal appointment and resume most normal activities the same day. However, if sedation is recommended to help manage anxiety or enhance comfort, a responsible adult will be required to drive you home afterward. Our team discusses these details with you ahead of time, so you know exactly what to expect and can plan transportation for your root canal accordingly.

Are There Options to Help Me Relax During Root Canal Treatment?

Yes, several comfort options are available for patients who feel nervous about root canal therapy and other dental procedures. Sedation may be recommended depending on your level of anxiety, medical history, and the complexity of treatment. In addition, our providers take extra time to explain each step of the process, answer questions, and create a calm environment throughout your visit. We work closely with each patient to determine what level of support will help them feel most at ease during care.

Is It Safe to Get a Root Canal While Pregnant?

Yes. When a root canal is needed to treat an infected or severely inflamed tooth, it is generally considered safe during pregnancy and is often recommended to prevent the infection from worsening. Untreated dental infections can pose greater risks than receiving appropriate dental care. Local anesthesia can be safely used during pregnancy, and necessary precautions are taken to protect both mother and baby. If you're pregnant, be sure to let our team know before your appointment so we can tailor your treatment and coordinate your care as needed.

How Would I Know if My Root Canal Failed?

Although root canal therapy is highly successful, it's possible for a treated tooth to develop a new infection months or even years later. Signs of a failed root canal may include persistent or returning tooth pain, swelling of the gums, tenderness when chewing, sensitivity, a pimple-like bump on the gums, or discoloration of the tooth. In some cases, there may be no noticeable symptoms, and the problem is discovered during a routine dental exam or X-ray. If you suspect something isn't right, contact our office promptly. Our team can evaluate the tooth and determine whether retreatment or another procedure is recommended.

Will I Be Able to Talk Normally After a Root Canal?

Yes. Most patients are able to speak normally shortly after a root canal. While your mouth may feel numb for a few hours because of the local anesthetic, this temporary sensation usually affects eating and drinking more than speaking. Once the numbness wears off, any mild soreness should not significantly interfere with normal conversation. If your tooth receives a temporary restoration, our team may recommend avoiding very hard or sticky foods until your permanent restoration is placed, but you can generally return to your normal daily activities, including talking, the same day.

At Bloom Endodontics, Dr. Timothy Gibson provides advanced root canal therapy to relieve pain, stop infection, and preserve your natural teeth. With precision techniques and a compassionate approach, our team is here to help restore your comfort and protect your long-term oral health. If you’re experiencing tooth pain or have been told you need a root canal, contact our office in Summerville, SC today to schedule your consultation.
